Bridging the Gap in the in the Writers Strike!
A breakthrough in the crippling writers strike has occurred during informal talks. But have they made any progress in the last three months?
Great but what was all the fuss in the first place? Well money for starters.
The writers felt that they were not being paid for work that was sold on DVD and on Internet downloads.
Writers currently get a small residual 0.3% for each DVD and downloads sold.
The WGA has been seeking to double this amount for its members, but has backed down.
Talks collapsed last month because there was no agreement on payment for shows that went online.
At last a deal seems to be in place, but before becoming official most of the 10,000 workers have to sign to accept the deal.
I think this is another classic case of new technology overtaking old economy.
Lets admit it there are an awful lot of people who are finding the new world of the internet threatening.
They need to get real and wake up to the facts. The Internet is here to stay, You can’t go on strike and make the Internet go away however much it effects your bottom line.
All in all I think they have found how hard it is to survive without a regular wage. Perhaps a few switched on writers have at last woken up to the power of the Internet.
