We always think of television celebrities as being poorer than movie stars, but if you look at the recently released lists of the richest people in television, you might surprise yourself drastically after you know how much television’s top grossing celebrities take home every year. The queen of talk, Oprah Winfrey took somewhere close to two hundred and sixty million dollars home last year. Compare this to what Julia Roberts, Hollywood’s top grossing actress makes per movie and you can easily calculate that Roberts will have to star in thirteen movies an year in order to equal Oprah’s feat. Based on this figure alone, you can quickly come to the conclusion that not many Hollywood celebrities are earning that much and that our views about movie stars being the richest are quite wrong.
When it comes to making dough, television celebs are really doing well and the top ten TV grossers make much more money than even the best paid Hollywood stars.
Number two on the list of richest TV personalities brought out by Forbes is Jerry Seinfeld, and considering that he is not really been visible ever since Seinfeld went off the air, his $60 million income last year is actually surprising.
Third on the list is American Idol judge Simon Cowell, who is another surprise entry considering all he does is be a judge on two popular shows. However, his income from his job as a television producer and a senior executive at Sony BMG, combined with all the change he keeps gathering from his TV appearances have made him the third richest TV celebrity. Following Cowell is comedian David Letterman with his yearly earnings touching $40 million last year. But considering his talent and his work, this should not actually be too much of a surprise.
However, one guy who is actually a surprise is Donald Trump, who it turns out takes home only somewhere along thirty two million dollars instead of the billions that we thought he was netting. Considering that Trump is a TV name that is actually more popular than Oprah and that we used to class him along with Warren Buffett and the likes, this is actually a let down. Another top grosser is talk show host and comedian Jay Leno, which is to be expected because of the way that he has become a fixture on American television and because of the reason that everybody who is anybody has to be on his show.
Other rich and famous people on TV are Dr. Phil McGraw and “Judge” Judy Sheindlin. Yeah, we know their shows are popular but one thing that we do not know is why. However, since nobody minds watching these people on TV, we can easily say that their wealth is well deserved and good luck to them.
