When It Comes To Royal Celebrities, Britain Still Rules The Roost
There used to be a time when royalty was the only thing that got you celebrity in the world. Today’s celebrities—entertainers, actors, writers and sportspeople—were mere pawns in the hands of kings and queens who used to be the only interesting and awe inspiring topics around three hundred years before. Today however, times have changed, and royalty has just become a very small part of the celebrity crowd. At the same time, the importance given to royal celebrities is much more than what is given to the usual celebrity crowd by a population that is still being brought up on a steady dose of king, queen, prince and princess fairy tales and stories.
Talking about royal celebrities, the plaque for the most popular royals in the world will undoubtedly go to the Prince of Wales and his family. The reigning British Queen has gotten much more unwanted attention than any other monarch in recent times due to the exploits of her children and their spouses. But if we had to choose the most popular royal celebrity of all times, then even nursery school children will tell you that it is Diana, the Princess of Wales, and they would be right.
Princess Diana, royal by association has managed to garner and gather so much love and support across the world such that even more than ten years after her death, she is more alive than dead. Diana was the perfect royal celebrity, in fact, if you had one made to specification, you could not have done better. Beautiful, young, charismatic Diana, dutiful wife and princess par excellence, propounder of social and global causes, concerned about all and sundry, she is not called the People’s Princess for no reason at all. Her tragic personal life and even more tragic end have led to the creation of an icon who far surpasses any living and most dead celebrities. Even today, Princess Diana is first page news all across the world, and we are sure that she will remain so even fifty years hence.
On the other hand, Prince Charles, Diana’s husband and Prince of Wales has become another royal celebrity not because he is Britain’s heir to the throne, but because he was Princess Diana’s husband and the villain of her life’s story. Diana’s going public with her story has ensured that the erstwhile private and contained royal family will no longer remain so. Of course, considering Prince Charles exploits, we doubt that they would anyways have remained private and contained much longer. Other royal celebrities who keep popping in and out of the news are the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson and Diana’s inadequate replacement, Camilla Parker Bowles, the Duchess of Windsor.
However, the world is today focused on the exploits of the next generation of British royal celebrities, the princes William and Harry, who can always be found on the viewfinder of almost every press camera nowadays. While the professional and personal lives of both princes are examined and judged bit by bit by the whole world, we can only hope that they manage to handle both fame and celebrity better than their parents.
