The Best Job in the Film Industry - Movie Director

If you could choose you ideal job, what would it be? I’m sure many people would say that they would like to be supper rich and not have a to work at a job at all.Fair enough! I can definitely see the appeal of that sort of lifestyle although it may get a bit boring after a while. Reality for most of us is that we need to work in a job. As for me, my ideal position would be a successful career in film. Just to be clarify, I’m not talking about acting. I prefer something behind the scenes. One day I hope to be a screenwriter. Okay, I know what you’re thinking. The writers have no real pull! A fair assumption. In reality it’s the movie producers and directors who call the shots. So if you could choose which one of these is your dream job? I know you’ve thought about it.

Some may not agree with me, but I think there is a small part of everyone that dreams of becoming a successful movie director, producer, or actor. We’re too close to films and television to not chew over this. I’ll bet you spend a good portion of your day indulging in movies and TV shows. Most Americans do. What could it be like to be in charge of those movies and TV shows we all watch?

I encountered many people in college who wanted to become movie directors. Then again I was in numerous courses to achieve my minor in film studies. Anyway, it just surprised me how many people wanted to direct film or television. No one wanted to write or produce. I suppose they wanted to be that artistic mind behind the madness. Now, I’m going to be completely frank. It’s very difficult to become a successful movie director. More difficult than it is to become an actor. Notice how most actors evolve to directing. Not the other way around. It’s a massive responsibility to be the author of a film or television series. This is why most who try, fail. Your best chance at stardom is doing stuff on your own. Make a film with other aspiring film makers like yourself. Take it to festivals or send it to competitions. This is the way many individuals break in these days.

Another important part of becoming a successful movie director is knowing the business. Read a few legitimate books on film and directing. The more you know the better your chances are. Finally, consider who you know. Obviously this business, and the business of life in general, is often about who you know.
