How To Become A Celebrity

To become famous, or a celebrity, is relatively easy it would seem these days. With more and more reality shows appearing on television, it seems hardly possible that there are very many people left who have not enjoyed the fifteen minutes of fame that Andy Warhol predicted that we would all have by now. Assuming that you are reading this article because you have an interest in becoming a celebrity yourself, how do you go about doing this?

There are a few things you need to think about first – one of which is what exactly you want to be famous for. If you look at the reality television shows, you may well see a large number of ordinary everyday folk becoming famous, overnight celebrities. But ask yourself a deeper question than that – why have they become so well known? Often it is not merely that they have appeared on television. Usually the everyday people who have been on television are forgotten, but a few are remembered long afterwards – why? There are a few basic reasons, and it is well worth bearing these in mind before you embark on your quest for fame. Think of three ordinary people who have appeared on television famous merely for being on some kind of reality show such as Big Brother. Now think about what it was that made them unique, different from the previous contestants, and made them stand out much more. Sadly, it is very often the case that their fame has been confused with either infamy or notoriety.

In which case, do you really want to run the risk of being famous and celebrated for simply being stupid, with everybody laughing at you? I’m sure you can easily think of a few people who fit that description. Other examples of a more negative brand of fame include being a fashion disaster, looking odd or unusual in some way, being sexually provocative or flirtatious, or being rude or ignorant when it comes to opinions. If you wish to become famous, ask yourself whether you could really be happy walking down the street to the shops knowing that everyone who saw you would be labelling you in any of these ways.

Of course, it may well be that you look reasonable, you’re intelligent and emotionally well balanced, you have a good sense of fashion and don’t take yourself too seriously. If you’re as well balanced as this, it may well be that you’re also fairly boring, and the media will need to find something about you to make their stories sell. What is it about you that will sell stories?

Although reality television is one way in to the world of fame, and indeed there are a very few ordinary people who have gone in to such shows and emerged with their reputations intact, and gone on to become bit part actors in television, with the prospect of moving onwards and upwards in the future, but there are other avenues worth pursuing.

Talent shows are one such opportunity which is open to most people today, although it comes with its own very harsh and often cruel rules. If you honestly believe that you are especially good at something, perhaps singing, dancing, acrobats, juggling, telling jokes, performing magic and so on, then by all means have a go. However, very often these shows are based on failure rather than success. Most people start watching these shows to enjoy laughing at those people who honestly believe they’re highly talented individuals, only to have their world collapse around them as the harsh judgement is dealt to them by the judges. Of the many thousands who enter such a show, there is only one winner, and almost all of the other contestants become quickly forgotten once the adverts start being broadcast for the next series.

If you are starting to think that neither of these avenues seems like the path for you, then there is one other way to help you achieve the fame you crave. People become famous, and possibly achieve celebrity status, for being someone to achieve something never done before, or never done in the same way, or as well, or as quickly as before. To become the first person to do something is often a way in which you can help to get your name in the public domain. For example, let’s assume you are really good at juggling. A juggler might become well known in the high street of his local town for doing a little act on a Sunday afternoon in the market square, but to become well known needs an edge. By letting the local papers and radio stations know that you are going to attempt a juggling feat never before achieved will immediately get your name known.

Perhaps by juggling three live chickens whilst hanging upside down from a helicopter the local papers and radio stations will help to get your name known much more quickly and widely – and then what? To become really famous you need to keep the momentum going – perhaps doing major charity stunts, speaking out about important affairs, travelling around doing major stunts. This is the way to build celebrity status that lasts – be genuine, be different, and keep your name in the public domain.
